| F | Fasten Life jacket - Buckle up, wear the gear. |
| E | Education - Get trained. |
BOATING EDUCATION
One of the requirements of membership in TWS is that, "All members must complete a safe boating course within the first year of membership."
ONLINE COURSES:
BoatEd offers the online Ohio Boating Education Course for boat and PWC safety which is approved by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Watercraft and is the official boat safety course material used by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources in their classroom courses. Although there is a $15 fee for the final test, pass or fail, there is also a FREE pretest available to check your progress whenever you like.
Boat U.S. Foundation offers both General and PWC Online Courses for FREE. The certificate can be printed or mailed.
Boat Safe offers the Safe Boating Course for a $15 fee. Certificates are mailed.
Boater101 offers an online course for a $15 fee. Certificates are mailed.
PWCSafetySchool.com offers a FREE online PWC course for a growing number of states. This course is currently accepted for Indiana and Michigan residents, while an Ohio course is in the works.
These courses are NASBLA approved and USCG recognized. The examination for these courses is available online for Ohio residents. While some Internet courses are approved for Michigan residents 16 and older, all examinations must be proctored (in person). Therefore examinations are not available online for Michigan residents. However any NASBLA approved certificate is accepted in Michigan for non-residents if accepted by their state. (updated 07/01/03)

Travel
to and from Canada
After the events of 09/11/2001 the rules changed regarding travel to and from Canada.
You must comply with requirements of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, the U.S. Customs Service, and the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency.
While in Canadian waters, if you drop anchor, touch shore in any manner, or touch a Canadian vessel, you have entered Canada.
When you arrive in Canada you must contact the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency at 1-888-226-7277 from a land-line ONLY!
When you return to the U.S. you must contact both the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service and U.S. Customs Service.
Unless you have the I-68 form, you must contact the INS upon each return in person, or by the OARS Video Phone system.
The Customs Service may be contacted by phone at 1-888-523-BOAT.
A good article in the Toledo Blade summarizes the rules the best.
